First week at the new home
Wow. Such a huge life step to be a homeowner. My wonderful boyfriend has blessed me with such a beautiful place to call home. I will forever be thankful for that. Ever since I've lived in Detroit there's so much to love about the city. The day we moved into our home I had already lived in Detroit for 6 months. I will miss a lot about living right in the city but at least now we still aren't to far.
List of pros & cons about our old apartment. Also if anyone is interested in our old place check it out! It'll probably sell fast because of the views. We lived at River Place Apartments.
Pros:
The beautiful view of the city.
Convenient to reach anything in the city.
Having a two bedroom.
Andrews on the corner.
The riverwalk.
Biking to Batch.
Marketplace store.
Being able to see Canada across the water.
Cons:
Our annoying neighbors above us that would bump to music until late at night, even on weekdays.
The new management was terrible.
Added monthly pet fee we had to pay for Maya.
Having to walk across the courtyard, elevator down to first level then walk Maya out to take potty.
Drunk people outside our apartment on the streets.
Hard for friends to find parking.
Just to name a few things. I can honestly say this is one of the better life choices we've made. Honestly last winter we made an offer in this one house that they ended up accepting someone else's offer. I remember Alex & I feeling discouraged because we really wanted it and were let down. Then I remembered if it's meant to be, it's meant to be. We kept searching. We found our current house because his good friend Antonio told the owner was getting ready to sell it soon. We pestered the guy for months I swear before he was finally ready for us to come get a house tour. We viewed the house right before we came home to Virginia for the holidays. I instantly fell in love with it. From what I noticed while house hunting was a lot of the homes we were interested in some of them were just flipped. We really loved the Boston Edison Historical District. Some of the things we wanted was a home with craftsmanship, fireplace, hardwood floors, extra guest rooms, updated kitchen, extra bathroom, claw tub, garage, and a yard for Maya. We pretty much got everything on that list.
We officially bought our home March 3rd. I swear as soon as the papers were signed Alex wanted to start doing tasks around the house. We had decided to rip up the carpet on the first level because we love the look of hardwood floors. I came home from work to help him some before my parents came from Virginia. Alex made huge headway getting the carpets done. Thank god we go rid of the emerald green 30 year old carpet. My dad ended up staying late to help him, as well as Ian coming to help. Even Antonio came over to help as well I believe. The guys did really a lot of work & ended up being up quite late. Though we still have some work to do on the floors they are getting there!
Saturday morning was moving day! So excited for this day yet also not thrilled because moving is the worse. My parents had brought eggs from their chickens back home which were amazing. Yellowest yolks I'd ever seen. Our wonderful friend Cauli came to our apartment early in the morning to help with moving. Which we're super blessed for because he got work a lot or he's with his beautiful baby. Movers came bright & early to get a move on. We used JMB movers from Sterling Heights. We were pretty unhappy with this moving company for reasons I won't discuss. But I wouldn't recommend them at all. You never realize how much stuff you have until you have to box everything up. Moving took so many hours. Beyond blessed my parents drove from Virginia to come help us. They were a huge help. My dad helped build our beds back together and mom bless her soul cleaned our bathrooms. They spoiled us rotten over the weekend and we loved it.
We ended up dropping Maya off at a friends house during the day to be watched. We didn't want her to over simulated by all the new people. For those of you who don't know Maya hurt herself not long ago at the dog park. Was hardcore limping first few days. Vet says she'll need knee surgery but until then wait some before she gets it done. Though her limping has improved it's still sad. So she'll get surgery soon then have a 3 month rehab process. Please pray for her she'll need all the positive vibes.
I can't believe it's already been a week since we moved into our new home. There's so much I truly love about this home. We are still very blessed to have been able to get this home. Our wonderful seller Issa went above & beyond to help us with this process. He's become more of a friend than anything. He welcomed us into his home with opened arms. He was very generous with us & even gave us a few things for first time home owners. I'm glad we'll have a friendship for years to come. I know they say it's best never to do a private seller but for us it worked perfectly.
There's just so many little quirks we love about the house. I'll list a few that I'm quite fond of.
The fact that we have old school laundry shoots, on the first & second level. Makes it easy for us not to leave dirty clothes on the floor.
The beautiful wood floors we've uncovered.
The fact that we have neighborhood security, an alarm system, & cameras. That helps me feel truly safe.
Being closer to good friends.
Being able to really call this place home and be able to make it our own.
Being apart of a community.
Having lots of room for when family & friends come to visit.
My dressing room which is basically just a room for all my clothes.
The details of this house are stunning.
A huge thank you again to all our family & friends who have helped us, spoiled us, and made us feel at home, We are truly blessed & we cherish you.
Alex got some fancy Jenn-air appliances which I'm so excited for because we both really enjoy cooking! We already receieved our dishwasher, fridge and microwave. The dishwasher isn't hooked up yet so it's sitting in our basement. Our fridge sits higher up because it's an older home. I'm pretty tall but I can't reach the top back half of the fridge so we had to buy me a step stool haha. I'm so thrilled for this kitchen to come together & we can make real meals together. We still have some unpacking to do. But we've been getting there. Already this place feels like home. So excited to transform this place and make it our own.
Remember always be thankful.
Kiss those you love.
& never give up.

Green carpet, floor padding, buffed floors. Still some ways to go but looking good.
View from old apartment.
Replacing toilet seats was one of our first tasks.
